Christmas for Serbs who are Christian Ortodox, comes two weeks later than that of Roman Catholics. Serbs do not celebrate Christmas on December 25th, but on January 7th, while they celebrate New Year on January 13th rather than on December 31st. This is because the Serbs follow the Julian calendar, while Roman Catholics follow the Gregorian calendar. 

The Gregorian reformation of the calendar came into force on 1582. It made corrections in the Julian calendar, the ten days from October 5th to 14th were canceled. Of course, not all countries changed over to the Gregorian calendar at that time. Germany, for instance, didn’t accepted the Gregorian calendar until 1775, while Bulgaria didn’t do so until 1917.

Serbs, like the most other people, accepted officially the Gregorian calendar, but all holidays, specially of cultural or religious contents, were celebrated according to the Julian calendar.

The Serbian Orthodox Church uses the traditional Julian Calendar. From 1900 until 2100, the Julian calendar is 13 days behind the Gregorian and therefore Serbian Christmas Day falls on 7 January of the Gregorian calendar. Note "Christmas Day" is in fact only the first day of Christmas, as the festival is celebrated for three consecutive days.

The Serbian name for Christmas is Božić.

Serbia is the honored country of 9th Thessaloniki Book Fair

Thessaloniki Book Fair 24-27 May 2012

The organization of the 9th Thessaloniki International Book Fair will be held from 24 to 27 May, at exhibition grounds of Helexpo, organizers are the National Book Center, the Helexpo and the Panhellenic Federation of Publishers and Booksellers.

Over 200 events will be organized at the 9th Thessaloniki Book Fair. This year, the honored country is Serbia, and the program includes thematic "corners" for children, teens, teachers and parents.

Serbia is the country which in recent years translates the most Greek literary works: Greek National Book Center records 457 titles of Greek books translated to Serbian language. Furthermore, the Serbian pavilion will host the exhibition "Ivo Andric - writer and / or diplomat."

Манастир Раваница је манастир у Србији и налази се у подножју Кучајских планина, поред села Сење код Ћуприје. Раваница је задужбина кнеза Лазара, који је погинуо у бици на Косову на Видовдан, 28. јуна 1389. Манастирска Црква је посвећена Вазнесењу Господњем.

Тога дана је Господ са Горе јелеонске (Маслинске), као Богочовек, првобитну нашу природу људску вазнео на небо и посадио је са десна стране Бога Оца, где јој је и место будући да је створена по слици и прилици Његовој. Заиста нема већег дана од тога дана. Зато и наш народ има право што овај Спаситељев дан зове СПАСОВДАН, и то ВЕЛИКИ СПАСОВДАН.
